VINMOD MW® : An innovative tool for groundwater pollution evaluation and quantification. The unique feature of VINMOD is that, unlike many commonly used methods and models, it doesn't require inputs for source parameters and/or measurements from dense monitoring wells. Users can apply VINMOD to determine the status of groundwater pollution even in a situation where there is no sufficient data and source of pollution is unknown. VINMOD MW is feature-rich with advanced simulation algorithm compared to its predecessor PINwin, a tool which was used in a European funded multi-lateral project INCORE (Integrated Concept for Groundwater Remediation) comprising five partner countries : Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland.

VINMOD Overview:
VINMOD is a mass balance based novel model developed by Dr. Allelign Zeru for the inversion of pumped concentrations to quantify groundwater pollution under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions (Selected References)

VINMOD helps to determine mass flow rate and natural concentration distribution of undisturbed contaminant plume, i.e. pre-pumping concetration distribution. VINMOD is useful even in a situation where there is no sufficient monitoring wells for point measurements and the source of pollution is unknown. It has features to simulate multi-well options. The main applications of VINMOD are evaluation of the state of groundwater pollution, health risk studies, remediation design studies. VINMOD requires principal input parameters such as concentration-time series data, groundwater flow velocity field, aquifer thickness, soil porosity, and areas of streamtubes within the well capture zone. Basic principle of the inversion of pumped concentration using VINMOD is as follows :

Inversion of radial data into a concentration distribution at the transversal section of a contaminant plume, i.e. at the ICP (Imaginary Control Plane). It a process of regaining the undisturbed concentration distribution so that the total pollutant mass flow rate at the ICP can easily be calculated :

Under heterogeneous conditions, VINMOD may reguire input data from external flow and particle tracking models such as MODFLOW and MODPATH. Streamtube areas under heterogeneous conditions can be calculated using EDigitizer.
